4 Powerful Steps to Trust God When Life Feels Overwhelming

[Adapted from Josh’s YouTube video]

Life Is Hard, But God Is Faithful

Life can be overwhelming—filled with unanswered questions, grief, and moments of doubt. Yet, no matter what you’re facing, the truth remains: God is with you. He’s near to the brokenhearted and offers hope to those who trust Him. Let’s explore how you can hold on to your faith when the storms of life rage.

Step 1: Remember Who God Is

When life feels uncertain, anchor yourself in the unchanging character of God. He is:

  • Faithful: "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful" (Hebrews 10:23).

  • Good: "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him" (Psalm 34:8).

  • In Control: "The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations" (Psalm 146:10).

Reflection Questions:

  • What aspect of God’s character brings you the most comfort right now?

  • How can you remind yourself daily of His faithfulness, goodness, and sovereignty?

Practical Application:

  • Write down these truths about God and place them where you’ll see them daily (e.g., your mirror, journal, or phone wallpaper).

  • Speak these promises aloud each morning to reset your focus on God’s unchanging nature.

Step 2: Remember What God Has Done

Trusting God in the present often begins by remembering His faithfulness in the past. In the Bible, God instructed the Israelites to set up memorial stones after crossing the Jordan River to remind them of His provision.

Reflection Questions:

  • What specific prayers has God answered in your life?

  • How has He provided for you in ways you didn’t expect?

Practical Application:

  • Create your own “stones of remembrance” by listing answered prayers and blessings in a journal.

  • Share one testimony of God’s faithfulness with a friend or loved one this week to encourage them and reinforce your own trust in Him.

Step 3: Surrender Control to God Daily

Letting go of control can feel counterintuitive, especially when life feels chaotic. Yet, Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Reflection Questions:

  • What areas of your life are you holding onto tightly?

  • How can you surrender them to God in trust?

Practical Application:

  • Begin each day with a simple prayer: “God, I don’t have all the answers, but I trust You. Lead me today.”

  • When anxiety creeps in, pause and remind yourself that God’s plans are better than your own.

Step 4: Surround Yourself with Faithful Community

The people you surround yourself with can either strengthen or weaken your trust in God. Scripture encourages us:
"Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another" (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Reflection Questions:

  • Who in your life encourages you to trust God?

  • How can you deepen your connections with people who speak truth into your life?

Practical Application:

  • Commit to attending church or a small group consistently.

  • Listen to worship music or uplifting podcasts that draw you closer to God.

  • Share an encouraging Bible verse with a friend or on social media to spread hope.

A Time of Prayer

Close this time with a prayer to refocus your heart on God’s faithfulness:
“Lord, I surrender my worries and burdens to You. Thank You for being faithful, good, and in control, even when life feels overwhelming. Help me to trust You daily and to surround myself with people who encourage my faith. Strengthen my heart as I rest in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

You’re Not Alone

No matter how hard life gets, remember: God is not done with you yet. He’s walking with you every step of the way. Lean into His presence, His word, and the people He’s placed around you.
